-- about the gamma ethniki --

competition format

The Gamma Ethniki, or 3rd Division, is Greece’s 3rd highest soccer league. The league is separated geographically into 4 groups. Groups A, C, and D have 15 teams while Group B has 16 teams. Each team within a group plays the other twice, home and away. At the end of the season the top team from each group is promoted to the Greek Football League (2nd division). Since the format of the league will change for the 2017-2018 season (expanding to 8 groups), less teams will be relegated compared to previous years. This year, only the last placed team from groups A, C, and D will be relegated while the two last placed teams from Group B will be relegated to the local championships. The champions from each local championship will be promoted to next year's Greek 3rd Division. For the 2017-2018 season, the third division will have 8 groups of 13-14 teams each and the winners of each group will play in a mini-league playoff series for the four promotion places to the Greek Football League.

If two or more teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the league matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head results)
  2. Superior goal difference from the league matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head goal difference)
  3. Higher number of goals scored (goals forced) from ALL league matches played
  4. Less number of goals against (goals conceded) from ALL league matches played
