-- EXPLANATION OF A1 Basket LEAGUE STANDINGS --

standings & calculation

The Greek A1 Basket League standings are calculated based off the most wins in the regular season. The top 8 teams at the conclusion of the A1 Basket League (26 games) qualify for the Basket League Playoffs. The two last placed teams are relegated to the Greek A2 Basket League whereas the top two teams from the A2 Basket League are promoted to the A1 Basket League. For the playoffs, the regular season rankings will be used to pair the teams as follows:

  • Quarter-Finals, First Round (Best of 3 series)
    • Pair 1: 5th place verses 8th place
    • Pair 2: 6th place versus 7th place
  • Quarter-Finals, Second Round (Best of 3 series)
    • Pair 3: 3rd place verses Winner of Pair 2 (6th vs 7th) from 1st Round
    • Pair 4: 4th place verses Winner of Pair 1 (5th vs 8th) from 1st Round
  • Semi-Finals (Best of 5 series)
    • Semi-Final 1: 1st place verses Winner of Pair 4 (4th vs 5th/8th) from the Quarter-Finals
    • Semi-Final 2: 2nd place verses Winner of Pair 3 (3rd vs 6th/7th)from 2nd Round
  • Finals (Best of 5 Series)
    • Championship: Winners of the two Semi-Final Pairs
    • 3rd Place: Loser of the two Semi-Final Pairs

tie breakers

If two or more teams are equal on wins, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the league matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head results)
  2. Superior point difference from the league matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head point difference)
  3. The team with the higher quotient, points forced divided by points against, from all league matches played

euroleague & FIBA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE placements

Olympiacos and Panathinaikos have a contract with the EuroLeague and are automatically placed in the competition every year. The number of teams that will represent Greece in next year's (2017-2018) FIBA Champions League will be determined at a later date, as it is a new competition. In this year’s FIBA Champions League Greece will be represented by three teams: Aris, PAOK, and AEK.
