-- uefa euro 2016 QUALIFYING --

UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifying includes 53 nations and consists of two rounds, the Group Stage and Playoff Round, before the final tournament in France. UEFA’s National Team Rankings are used to determine the seeds (pots) for both the qualifying and final tournament draws. The host nation, France, automatically qualify for the Final Tournament.

group stage

The UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifying Group Stage consists of 53 teams separated into 8 groups of 6 teams and one group of 5 teams. Each team plays the other twice, home and away. After the conclusion of the fixtures the 9 group winners, 9 group runner ups, and the best third place team (games against the 6th placed team are disregarded) qualify for the final tournament in France. The 8 remaining third placed teams advance to the Playoff qualifying round. Three points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

TIE-BREAKER CRITERIA

If two or more teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head results).
  2. Superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head goal difference).
  3. Higher number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head goals scored).
  4. Higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e head to head away goals).
  5. Superior goal difference from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.
  6. Higher number of goals scored from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.
  7. Higher number of away goals scored from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.
  8. Fair play conduct from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.
  9. Higher UEFA National Team Coefficient Ranking.

3rd place CRITERIA

Since 8 groups have 6 teams and one group has 5 teams, the results from the 6th placed team in each group are not used in the “3rd place rankings.” The best third placed team will be determined using the below criteria:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in ALL group matches.
  2. Superior goal difference from ALL group matches.
  3. Higher number of goals scored in ALL group matches.
  4. Higher number of away goals scored in ALL group matches.
  5. Fair play conduct.
  6. Higher UEFA National Team Coefficient Ranking.

playoff qualifiers

The Euro 2016 playoff qualifiers consist of 8 teams. They include the remaining 8 third placed teams from the Qualifying Group Stage. The 8 teams are paired into four playoffs and play under a two legged knockout system (home and away basis). The team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches advances to the Euro Finals. Away goal rules apply in the case of a tie. The final four places for the final tournament are granted via these playoffs.

the away goal rule

The away goal rule applies for the matches played under the two legged knockout system. This rule is applied if the two teams are tied on goals over the two legs. In this case the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e. if both teams score the same number of goals at home and away, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played at the end of the second leg. If, during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, the away goals count double (i.e. the away club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalties will determine which club qualifies for the next round.
