-- QUALIFYING for the 2017 World championships --

 

QUALIFYING FORMAT

Qualification for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championships consist of 3 rounds. A total of 7 teams will qualify for the final tournament while 3 will gain automatic bids.

  • First Qualifying Round: The first qualifying round consists of 8 teams separated into 2 pools (groups) of 4 teams. The matches from each pool will be held at a single venue with each team from the pool playing their opponents once. The top two teams (most wins) from each pool advances to the second round. 
  • Second Qualifying Round: The second qualifying round consists of 36 teams (4 from the previous round and 32 automatically qualify) separated into 6 pools (groups) of 6 teams. The matches from each pool will be held at a single venue with each team from the pool playing their opponents once. In the case of Greece, the tournament will be held in the Netherlands. The top team (most wins) from each pool qualifies for the World Championships. The 2nd placed teams advances to the 3rd Qualifying Round (playoff).
  • Third Qualifying Round: The third qualifying round consists of the 6 second placed teams from the 2nd qualifying round. The matches from this wound will be held at a single venue with each team from the pool playing their opponents once. The top team (most wins) will earn the final ticket to the World Championships.
  • Automatic Bids: The 3 automatic bids will go to the hosts, Italy and Bulgaria, and the World Champions Poland. The 6 pool winners of the second qualifying round along with the 1 third qualifying round winner will join the 3 automatically qualified nations to form Europe's 10 representatives at the 2018 World Championships .
 

STANDINGS & TIE BREAKERS

The first criteria in the standings are matches won. If two or more teams have won the same number of wins, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the group matches. Match won 3-0 or 3-1 gives 3 points to the winner and 0 points to the loser. Match won 3-2 gives 2 points to the winner and 1 point to the loser.
  2. Higher sets ratio score. Determined by sets won divided by sets lost.
  3. Higher points ratio score. Determined by points won divided by points lost.
  4. The result of the last match between the tied teams (i.e last head to head meeting).
