- On May 17th the Greek Cup Final -
Finally…A date for the Greek Cup Final. After a long, drawn out, battle between EPO, Kontonis, and other parties, a date has been announced (Tuesday May 17th) for the Greek Cup Final. FIFA’s involvement helped end the chaos!
FIFA pressured the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) to change their stance about the assistant referees for the Final. EPO decided to comply with FIFA’s request, leading to an agreement between Kontonis, FIFA and EPO. Tasos Sidiropoulos will be the head referee and his UEFA Champions & Europa League assistants (Kostaras and Efthymiadis) will accompany him in Tuesday’s Final.
Now that the referee issue is resolved and a date has been announced for the Final, we wait to see the reactions from the playoff teams and Nova, the official broadcaster of the Superleague Playoffs. With the May 17th date, the Superleague playoff schedule is affected. Nova has stated on multiple occasions they will implement fines and act legally if the original SuperLeague Playoff schedule is changed. EPO announced that the game between Panathinaikos and PAOK will take place as originally scheduled, tomorrow-Sunday, and the AEK – Panionios game will be postponed. Additionally, the game between AEK and Panathinaikos, scheduled for the 3rd matchday on Wednesday, will also be re-scheduled.
So…Tuesday AEK and Olympiacos will play for the Greek Cup at an empty OAKA Stadium in Athens. On Monday, after the SuperLeague’s Board of Directors meeting, there will be a clearer picture of the new SuperLeague Playoff schedule. Stay tuned…
