- AEK Responds With 3 Goals Against Panathinaikos -

AEK 3 - 1 Panathinaikos
Johansson 5'
Barbosa 40', 69'
Leto 54'

After a 3-0 defeat in the previous matchday away to Panathinaikos, AEK responded with 3 goals of their own in their 3-1 victory over the Prasini. Barbosa scored twice for the home side while Panathinaikos played with 10-men for the entire second half.

AEK got off to a tremendous start with Johansson opening the score in the 5th minute of play. His header, from Mantalos’ free-kick, beat Luke Steele and found the back of the net. After the goal, Panathinaikos looked to be more of a threat as they created many chances in AEK’s half. Against the run of play, AEK punished Panathinaikos with a fantastic counter-attack and Barbosa doubled the home side’s lead. Things got worse for the visitors when Villafanez was harshly sent off with a red card for his “off the ball” tackle on Mantalos. Despite the man disadvantage, the Prasini cut AEK’s lead in half with Leto’s header and they were back in the game. The Kitrinomavri created chances to regain their two goal lead, but Steele kept Panathinaikos alive. A defensive lapse from the visiting defense, and a spectacular second goal form Barbosa, put the game away for AEK with 20 minutes remaining. The Greek Cup Champions held onto their 3-1 victory, getting an important home win after their miserable 3-0 defeat at the Leoforos Alexandras Stadium.

The win puts AEK in second place, ahead of Panathinaikos, and only 2 points behind first placed PAOK. AEK will host PAOK in matchday 5 and a win will put them in first place going into the final matchday of the Playoffs. As for Panathinaikos, they will host Panionios in matchday 5 with the Prasini only needing a victory to keep their first place hopes alive.
