KILL BILL DOES IT AGAIN! With Olympiacos down by 2 in the 2nd overtime, Spanoulis hit another buzzer beater 3-pointer to give Olympiacos the Greek Basket League Title! This is a bitter end to a magical career for Greek and Panathinaikos legend Dimitris Diamantidis.
What a game…The players of both teams saved the best game for last. It was a special night for Greek and Panathinaikos legend Dimitris Diamantidis as he played his final match in front of his beloved Panathinaikos supporters. Olympiacos got off to a great start with an 8-0 run and was able to take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Diamantidis led his team with an 8-0 run, however Spanoulis responded with difficult shots of his own. The first half ended with Panathanaikos taking a 4 point lead into the break. Olympiacos took control of the third quarter through their great defensive play silencing the home crowd with an 11 point lead (50-39). Pappas then took over the game by going on a 10-0 run by himself to even the score to 50 a piece. In the fourth quarter both teams each went on a mini-run and the scores were tied with less than a minute to play. Diamantidis had the ball with a chance to give Panathinaikos the lead, but was called for a travel. Spanoulis had the opportunity to give Olympiacos a last second victory, however he failed to score sending the game to over-time.
The players from both teams played with passion at the beginning of overtime, adding to the spectacle of the game. With Olympiacos ahead by 1 point, Diamantidis hit a 3-pointer to give Panathinaikos a two point lead. Spanoulis answered back with a 3 of his own, before Calathes scored from behind the arc and Panathinaikos regained their 2-point lead. With about 4 seconds remaining Panathinaikos led by 3 points and Hackett was intentionally fouled. Hackett missed the first free throw then intentionally missed the second free throw. The ball was tipped out to Mantzaris, who sent the game to a second overtime with a last second 3-pointer. Panathinaikos took an early lead in the 2nd over-time and had many opportunities to put the game away, but failed to do so. With less than 10 seconds to play, Panathinaikos held onto their 2-point lead. The ball fell into the hands of Spanoulis, who was up against Diamantidis. Similar to the 2nd game of the series, Spanoulis pulled up from behind the arc and his shot stunned the home crowd, giving Olympiacos the 81-82 lead. Panathanaikos had one last play to take the lead but their half court prayer was off the mark. The players rushed into the locker-rooms and celebrated Olympiacos back-to-back Greek Basket League Title!
The hero, Spanoulis, was Olympiacos' leading scorer with 25 points. Hunter followed with 14 points and Mantzaris, who hit the tying 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime, had 13 points. Panathinaikos' next rising star, Pappas, had 16 points and Diamantidis scored 15 points in his final game.
Unfortunately, Olympiacos's win marks the end of Dimitris Diamantidis' professional playing career. Diamantidis was glorified by the home fans before, during, and after the match. The supporters chanted his name and thanked their captain for what he offered to the club in his 13-year stay at Panathinaikos. He ends his tremendous career with his head held high and will forever be one of the best Greek basketball players to play the game.
