France 2 - 1 Romania
Giroud 57'
Payet 89'
Stancu (p) 65'

The French got off to the start they were looking for in UEFA Euro 2016 earning a late 2-1 win over Romania. Payet scored a remarkable goal in the final minute to give France the victory.

The European Championship kicked off without Greece for the first time since 2000 as France hosted Romania in the opening game of UEFA Euro 2016. In the first half, each team each had a great chance, Lloris made a point blank save in the opening 5 minutes, and Greizmann’s header was denied by the woodwork. The opening goal came in the second half, when Payet’s cross was met by Giroud’s header to give France the 1-0 lead. Romania quickly responded and equalized from the penalty spot with Stancu. As Romania stood firm in the back, the game headed for a draw. However, Payet’s thunderous strike (a contender for goal of the tournament) gave France the 2-1 victory in the final minute of play. Payet was voted man of the match as he was the core of the French attack.

France will play Albania in the the second matchday of Group A while Romania will face off against Switzerland.
