- Sturridge Saves England in Stoppage Time -
UEFA EURO 2016 - GROUP STAGE (GROUP B)
|England||2 - 1||Wales|
Daniel Sturridge's goal in stoppage time gave England the 2-1 victory over Wales in the second matchday of Group B. Bale gave Wales the lead in the first half, but a 2nd half comeback from England gave the Three Lions the important victory.
Despite an uneventful first half, Gareth Bale gave Wales the lead with his second free-kick goal of the tournament. The first half was disappointing for England and Roy Hodgson made changes at halftime, subbing Vardy and Sturridge into the match. The substitutions proved to be effective and Vardy equalized 8 minutes after the restart. As the game headed for a 1-1 draw, a result that would favor Wales, substitute Daniel Sturridge gave England the victory in the 2nd minute of stoppage time. The win puts England first in Group B while Wales sits in 2nd place, tied with Slovakia on 3 points (Wales holds the head-to-head advantage over Slovakia). With everything up for grabs in the final matchday, England will face Slovakia and Wales will play Russia.
