The Greek U21 National Team defeated Hungary 3-1 in their final qualifier for Euro 2017 to end their campaign on a positive note. Both teams were playing for pride as they were mathematically eliminated before today’s match.
After Greece’s defeat in Israel on Thursday, the Ethniki Elpidon was mathematically eliminated from Euro 2017 qualifying with one match left to play. Greece wanted a good result at home against Hungary to end their disappointing campaign on a positive note. Tasos Donis found the opener in the 28th minute before the visitors scored an equalizer through Mervo in the 56th minute. Greece wanted the win as they were the better side throughout the match and Koulouris once again gave Greece the lead with an impressive goal in the 69th minute. Charisis secured all three points when he found the back of the net with 7 minutes remaining to give Greece the two-goal advantage. Hungary was left with 10 men in stoppage time and Greece celebrated their fourth victory in qualifying.
Greece finished qualifying with 4 wins, 1 draw, and 5 loses, accumulating 13 points. They claimed 3rd place in Group 4 behind Portugal (the clear favorites and dominate side in the group) and Israel while finishing ahead of Hungary, Albania, and Liechtenstein. The qualifying campaign was overall a disappointment as Greece looked to contest second place and a spot in the qualifying playoffs, a goal that was not achieved.
