Olympiacos fell 83-65 away to Real Madrid in the first round of the Euroleague Regular season. The game was close up until the end of the third quarter, where a mistake-filled fourth led to the heavy defeat for the Greek Champions.
Olympiacos traveled to the Barclaycard Center to face Real Madrid in the opening match of the “new” Euroleague. The Erythrolefki played well in the first half with Real Madrid taking a small 2-point lead into halftime (42-40). In the third quarter, Olympiacos took the lead at 49-51 but from that point on Real Madrid dominated the game. The Spanish side went on a 9-0 run (58-51) to regain the lead and in the fourth quarter Olympiacos made many mistakes (missed layups, bad passes, etc.) to find themselves down by double-digits. Real Madrid held onto their 10-12 point lead throughout the fourth quarter and increased it to 18 points in the final minutes to hand Olympiacos an 83-65 opening defeat for the 2016-2017 Euroleague Regular Season.
The leading scorer for the Greek club was Lojeski with 14 points, Spanoulis added 12 points, Printezis finished with 11 points, and Birch had an impressive night with 6 points and 10 rebounds. Patric Young showed that he is not at 100% yet, after a bad injury left him out for many months. Llull was Real Madrid’s leading scorer with 22 points.
In round 2, Olympiacos will host Anadolu Efes (Thurs, 20-Oct) and Real Madrid will play away to Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
