-- Back to Back Road Wins for Xanthi --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 8
|Platanias||0 - 1||Xanthi|
After defeating Panathinaikos in Athens last week, Xanthi defeated Platanias 0-1 in Chania for Matchday 8 of the Greek Superleague. The only goal of the game came in the 19th minute from Younes. Xanthi remains undefeated for four games and now have 8 point in the Superleague standings.
Xanthi put on another tactical seminar in Chania against Platanias as the hosts dominated possession, but did not pose a threat to Xanthi’s defense. The visitors looked to hit on the counter-attack or a set play and in the 19th minute Nieto’s free-kick was cleverly turned in by Younes’ header to give Xanthi the 0-1 lead. Platanias only created one chance in the first 45 minutes when Giakoumakis’ shot was well saved by Zivkovic.
It was a similar story in the second half as Platanias comfortably held onto the ball but did not know what to do with it. Xanthi kept their clean-sheet rather easily while their players sat behind the ball in hopes of defending their lead. The minutes went by with Platanias incapable of providing a response and the final whistle came, giving Xanthi their second consecutive road victory.
Xanthi’s win comes after they shocked Panathinaikos last week in Athens. Xanthi is now undefeated in their last 4 Superleague encounters as they now sit on 8 points in the standings. On the other hand, Platanias was handed their consecutive defeat after their loss to Asteras Tripolis last weekend. In matchday 9, Xanthi will look to make it three consecutive wins at home to Kerkyra while Platanias travels to Veria.
