-- Missed Chances Keep Panathinaikos Behind --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 8
|Veria||1 - 1||Panathinaikos|
|Balafas 88'||Berg 13'|
Another week and another frustrating result for Panathinaikos. The Prasini gave up a late goal in a 1-1 draw away to Veria and thereby left two more points on the table in a title race already going Olympiacos' way. The Prasini wasted many chances in the opening half to put the game away and Balafas' late equalizer kept Panathinaikos winless for a second straight weekend.
The final result was not so apparent in a first half dominated by the Trifylli. Andrea Strammacioni's men came firing out of the blocks, pinning Veria back in a half where there had 8 shots on target and many of them good opportunities. Panathinaikos opened the scoring in the 13th minute. And it was a superb team goal for the away team in a sequence that included 9 passes and eventually led to Victor Ibarbo serving Marcus Berg for the finish. Chance after chance followed for Panathinaikos and by the break they should have been up by at least 3 or 4 goals.
The second half saw Panathinaikos run out of gas as Veria slowly crept back into the game. Jonathan Lopez's heroics in goal kept Veria in the game and late on came the moment the home supporters were waiting for. Defender Ivan Malone sent in a cross and the ball ended on the foot of Sotiris Balafas and the defensive midfielder powered home the equalizer with only two minutes to play.
More dropped points for Panathinaikos who move up into second place with 11 points, but the disappointment will be huge. After Olympiacos' victory over PAOK, the Prasini are now 4 points behind the league leaders. Veria meanwhile under Thomas Grafas have improved and are now in 13th place with 5 points. Next weekend, Panathinaikos will host Iraklis while Veria play at home to Platanias.
