A Night of Big Returns

-- A Night of Big Returns --

Olympiacos 3 - 0 Platanias
Pardo 5', 66'
Elabdellaoui 68'

It was a night where “forgotten” players of Olympiacos made their statement to manager Paulo Bento as Olympiacos defeated Platanias 3-0 in their opening fixture for the 2017 Greek Cup. Felipe Pardo, who has been left out of the roster for many fixtures, scored twice while Elabdellaoui showed that he has surpassed his major injury by adding a third.

Paulo Bento made many changes to Olympiacos’ starting lineup for their Cup fixture against Platanias at the Karaiskaki Stadium. Players such as Siovas, Romao, Bouchalakis, Pardo, Dominguez, and Marin were given the opportunity to impress the Olympiacos manager. It did not take long for the hosts to find the breakthrough when Dominguez played the ball out wide to Pardo and the Colombian’s perfectly placed strike gave the hosts the 1-0 lead. The Bouchalakis-Romao duo in the midfield gave Olympiacos complete control of the game with the Erythrolefki having 70% of possession in the first half. Despite seeing most of the ball, the home supporters had to wait until the 66th minute to see another goal for their side when Siovas’ accurate cross found the head of Pardo, who scored another brilliant goal to double Olympiacos’ lead. Two minutes later, Elabdellaoui charged down the right side (something that was missing from Olympiacos this season) and scored his first goal since suffering a severe injury in April, which left him out for six months. The Erythrolefki held their 3-0 lead at the final whistle to begin their 2017 Cup campaign on a positive note.

In addition to Pardo who was named man of the match, Siovas, Romao, and Bouchalakis played exceptionally well and will give Bento something to think about in regards to future starting lineups. The return of Elabdellaoui will bring a sigh of relief to the people at Olympiacos as the right back position (and most of the backline) has been an issue this season.

Tomorrow, Sparti and Chania will play in the other Group B fixture in hopes of joining Olympiacos on 3 points in the group.
