The Greek Football League (2nd Division) FINALLY kicked off today with four matches. Apollon Smyrnis pulled off an amazing comeback victory against Kallithea to come away with all three points as Sparti bounced back after falling behind to Panthrakikos. Panegialios and Chania played to a goalless draw while Acharnaikos easily defeated Kalloni 3-0.
One of the promotion favorites for the season, Apollon Smyrnis, pulled off a tremendous comeback in their 2016/17 Football League opener, defeating Kallithea 3-2. Kallithea took the lead with Stamatakos in the 13th minute, but Diamantis quickly responded four minutes later to pull Apollon Smyrnis level. Stamatakos struck again late in the half and Kallithea took a 1-2 lead into the break. The visitors had a chance to double their lead after the restart when they were awarded a penalty, but Belis sent the ball out keeping Apollon Smyrnis in the match. With 10 minutes remaining, Diamantis once again equalized for his side before Albanis found the back of the net in the 3rd minute of stoppage time to give Apollon Smyrnis a thrilling comeback victory to begin their Football League campaign.
In the derby of the day, Sparti defeated Panthrakikos 2-1 at home. Iliadis gave the visitors the 0-1 lead in the 23rd minute and Anastasakos equalized for Sparti before the break. The comeback was completed for the hosts in the 60th minute when Siopis found the back of the net to give Sparti the 2-1 lead, which remained at the final whistle.
Acharnaikos had an easy night against Kalloni and defeated the side from Mytilene 3-0. Psianos opened the scoring in the 21st minute and two second half goals from Dunga (56’) and Sotirakos (90’) capped off a great start to the 2016/17 Football League season for Acharnaikos.
In Aigio, Panegialios and Chania played to a dull 0-0 draw with both teams ending the match with 10-men after Tsiligiris and Zeris were sent off late in the game.
