AEK remained perfect in this season’s Greek A1 Basket League after defeating PAOK 71-78 in the weekend’s derby. Today’s match was AEK’s first big test in this year’s league play as the Enosi moved to 6-0 for the season.

AEK traveled to Thessaloniki to play PAOK in the Basket League’s weekend derby. The Enosis not only wanted to hold onto their perfect start to the season, but wanted revenge after giving up a 24-point lead in last year’s match away to PAOK.

The hosts were the better side for the first 25 minutes, but their poor percentage from the free throw line (10/22) proved to be costly in the end. AEK took the lead for the first time (with the exception of their 0-2 lead to start the game) at the beginning of the fourth quarter with Dixon’s bucket making the score 58-60. AEK was much better in the final period as they pulled ahead by 8-points (59-67) four minutes before the end. PAOK got back into the game, cutting the visitor’s lead to 2-points (69-71) before Dixon’s dagger 3-pointer gave AEK a decisive 5-point advantage (69-74). In the final minute, Dixon converted from the free throw line and the Kitrinomavri held on to win 71-78.

Dixon led AEK with 22-points and Ukic followed with 16-points. For the losing side, Bryant was the leading scorer with 17-points and Glyniadakis added 15-points.

Today’s win keeps AEK undefeated to start the Basket League season, moving them to 6-0. The match in Thessaloniki was AEK’s first real test of the year in league play, giving them the confidence to continue their positive start. As for PAOK, they move to 4-2 after 6 games.
