Olympiacos played tremendous defense against Barcelona and came away with a 59-52 victory over their Spanish opponents for the 7th round of the Euroleague Regular Season. Barcelona was held to a team-low of 52 points as Olympiacos celebrated their 4th win of the season.
Olympiacos put on a defensive seminar as they defeated Barcelona 59-52 at the Stadio Erinis kai Filias. After a low scoring first half, Olympiacos managed to take a 7-point lead into halftime (32-25). Olympiacos’ lead increased in the third quarter when they went ahead by double digits (49-38). Barcelona had a hard time scoring with Olympiacos’ defense, causing them to only put up 14-points in the final quarter. The Erythrolefki were in control of the game and were not threatened by the visitors as they went on to win 59-52.
Spanoulis was the leading scorer for Olympiacos in yet another game with 15-points and 6-assists. Green added 9 points and both Birch and Printezis scored 6 points. Mantzaris was exceptional on the defensive end holding Rice to only 11-points (4/17 from the field). Holmes was the leading scorer for the visitors with 13-points and 9 rebounds.
The win moves Olympiacos to 4-3 in the regular season which matches Barcelona’s record for this season.The stellar Olympiacos defense held Barcelona to an all-time club low of 52 points, breaking their previous all-time low from 2007-2008 season, where they only scored 55 points against CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos. Olympiacos’ next test in the Euroleague will be on Friday at the OAKA Stadium against their big rivals Panathinaikos.
