Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos 77-79 at the OAKA Stadium for the 8th round of the Euroleague, recording their third consecutive victory away to their eternal rivals. Spanoulis had another big night against his former team and provided the assist to Printezis, who scored the winner with 3 seconds remaining. Olympiacos move to 5-3 for the season as Panathinaikos now sit at 0.500 (4-4).

After two thrilling wins on the road to Panathinaikos in last year’s Greek Basket League Finals, Olympiacos returned to the OAKA Stadium and came away with yet another impressive victory. Led by Spanoulis, the visitors were in control in the first half going ahead by as many as 10-points. Panathinaikos responded in the second half to take the lead, but in the end costly mistakes from the hosts resulted in their 4th defeat in this year’s Euroleague.

Three consecutive 3-pointers for Panathinaikos put them ahead 76-72 late in the game before a couple of mistakes from the hosts allowed Olympiacos to pull level 76-76 with 1:21 remaining. Sfairopoulos ordered his players to intentionally foul Calathes and the Panathinaikos guard went 1/2 from the line, giving his side the 77-76 lead. However, similar to last year’s Greek Basket League FInals, Olympiacos had the final say. A perfect pass from Spanoulis found Printezis under the basket and he converted the layup, while being fouled (made the free-throw), to put his side ahead 77-79 with 3 seconds remaining. An off-balanced 3-pointer from Fotsis at the end of the game missed the target as Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos for the second time this season (was victorious in earlier this season in the Greek Basket League).

It was another tremendous night for the Olympiacos’ captain, Vassilis Spanoulis, as he led his side with 22-points and 8-assists. The hero for the Erythrolefki, Georgios Printezis, scored 16-points. For the losing side, Nick Calathes put up 16-points and dished 9-assists while Antonis Fotsis scored 13-points (8-rebounds) and KC Rivers had 9-points.

The result moves Olympiacos to 5-3 in the Euroleague Regular Season before next week’s clash at the Stadio Erinis kai Filias against Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Panathinaikos are now 4-4 and will travel to Turkey to play Darussafaka in Round 9.
