Ajax 2 - 0 Panathinaikos
Schone 40'
Tete 50'

Panathinaikos fell 2-0 away to Ajax and were mathematically eliminated in Group G of this year's Europa League. Another goalkeeping mistake from Luke Steele gave Ajax the 1-0 lead in the 40th minute and an early second half goal doubled Ajax’s lead.

Panathinaikos traveled to Amsterdam knowing that a win could keep their chances of progression alive from Group G in the Europa League. Panathinaikos was the better side in the opening 25 minutes and came to close to taking the lead when Ibarbo’s shot hit the woodwork. However, Panathinaikos’ continuous goalkeeping problems resulted in Ajax’s first goal which came from Schone’s free-kick in the 40th minute. The goal cut Panathinaikos’ momentum as they trailed at halftime.

Five minutes into the second half, Ajax doubled their lead when Tete took advantage of Hult’s mistake and finished the opportunity with a nice shot that left no chance to Luke Steele. Panathinaikos seemed hopeless after the goal as Ajax continued their pressure in the opposing half. The hosts created chances to increase their lead, but were unable to do so. In the final 20 minutes, Ajax took their foot off of the gas and comfortably held onto their 2-0 lead until the final whistle.

The loss mathematically eliminates Panathinaikos in Group G as they sit at the bottom of the group with one point from five games. Ajax will top the group while both Standard Liege and Celta have 6 points going into the final matchday.
