In one of the matches of this (or any) season to date in the Greek SuperLeague, Atromitos fell behind by two goals (2-0, 3-1) on two occasions, but was able to come away with an epic 3-4 victory at the Toumba Stadium against PAOK. Canas’ sending off was the turning point of the match as Atromitos used the man advantage to score 3 goals in the final 16 minutes and come away with an impressive victory. The winner came in the third minute of stoppage time through Tonso.
Vladan Ivic’s men came out of the blocks with a vengeance buoyed by their Europa League win over Fiorentina last week. Garry Rodrigues picked up where he left off against Fiorentina by scoring just three minutes into the match to make it 1-0. Efthimios Koulouris doubled the Thessaloniki side’s lead just before the half hour as PAOK were all over their opponents and on cruise control.
Anthony Le Tallec pulled one back for Atromitos on 57 minutes, but PAOK responded quickly as 12 minutes later Ioannis Mystakidis made it a seemingly safe 3-1 advantage. Jose Canas’ sending off in the 73rd minute however set off a historic capitulation as Atromitos stormed back. Javier Umbides pulled Atromitos back to 3-2 in the 74th minute and substitute Dimitris Papadopoulos shocked the home crowd when he levelled the score for the visitors in the 86th minute.
As if that wasn’t enough, Giorgos Korakakis’ side found the winner in dramatic circumstances. Martin Tonso scored three minutes into injury time to send the away side into ecstasy and leave PAOK supporters fuming at the fact that their side allowed a sure win to turn into an unfathomable loss.
The loss keps PAOK on 11 points with their title hopes quickly fading as the league leaders, Olympiacos, sit on 22 points. Atromitos continues their exceptional form under their manager Georgios Korakakis, jumping ahead of PAOK with 14-points from 9 games. Next weekend, PAOK will have a tough test in Athens against Panathinaikos while Atromitos will travel to Larissa.
