UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - GROUP G (MATCHDAY 6)
|Panathinaikos||0 - 2||Celta Vigo|
Orellana (p) 76'
An horrendous Europa League campaign comes to an end for Panathinaikos. The Trifylli were handed their fifth defeat in six games in Group H after a 0-2 loss against Celta. Panathinaikos finishes bottom of the group with one point.
Panathinaikos hosted Celta in the final matchday of the Europa League group stage with Celta having much to play for while Panathinaikos looked for a “prideful” result. Marinos Ouzounidis made many changes to the starting XI, experimenting options as he begins to implement his tactics as new manager of the club.
It did not take long for the visitors to find the opener as Guidetti’s powerful header found the back of the net in the 4th minute. In the remaining 40 minutes of the first half, there was nothing to note as both sides created minimal chances, to say the least.
Panathinaikos was much better in the second half, but unfortunately for the Prasini it did not lead to an equalizer. In fact, Moledo committed a clumsy penalty on the goal scorer and from the spot, Orellana doubled Celta’s lead in the 76th minute. The second goal left no hope for a Panathinaikos comeback as they were handed their fifth defeat from six matches in group play.
The win sent Celta through the next round, taking advantage of Standard Liege’s slip up at home to Ajax (1-1). Ajax topped the group with 14 points and Celta finished second with 9 points. Standard Liege bowed out of the competition in third place with 7 points and Panathinaikos finished bottom with only one point.
