-- Panathinaikos On the Right Track --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 14
|Atromitos||0 - 1||Panathinaikos|
Panathinaikos defeated an in-form Atromitos side 0-1 and earned their second consecutive victory in the Superleague under their new manager Marinos Ouzounidis. The only goal of the game came late in the first half with Marcus Berg.
The opening 20 minutes saw both teams waste tremendous chances to open the scoring, including Berg’s one-on-one attempt with the keeper that went wide. After an eventful opening 44 minutes, Panathinaikos found the breakthrough in the final minute of the half. Ibarbo’s chipped pass found Berg in front of goal and his first effort was saved by Gorbunov, but the rebounded effort was put away by the Swedish international and Panathinaikos took a 0-1 lead into the break.
It was a different story in the second half as both teams created minimal chances. Panathinaikos sat back after the 60h minute and comfortably held onto their advantage while Atromitos, who were not on a good night, did not pose a threat. The minutes progressed with nothing to note and the final whistle gave Panathinaikos their second consecutive victory in the Superleague under their new manager Marinos Ouzounidis.
The win not only brings Panathinaikos within 4-points of the league leaders, Olympiacos (who play tomorrow in Giannina against PAS) but also gives the Trifylli an important three points on the road against one of the better sides in this year’s Superleague. Atromitos sit in 7th place with 17-points and will travel to Platanias next weekend while Panathinaikos play at the AEL FC Arena against Larissa.
