Kostas Mitroglou and Nikos Karelis stole the show in their respective cup matches in Portugal and Belgium on Wednesday. Karelis scored a hat-trick to lead Genk to a 1-3 victory over Charleroi while Mitroglou scored twice in Benfica’s 0-3 victory against Real SC.
Nikos Karelis continued his amazing season with Genk by scoring a hat-trick against Charleroi in Cup play. Karelis gave Genk the 0-1 lead in the 69th minute, but six minutes from time the hosts pulled level and sent the game into extra time. In overtime, the 24-year old Greek striker took matters into his own hands, scoring in the 94th minute to regive Genk the lead and in the 115th minute, he sealed his club’s victory with his third goal of the night.
The win put Genk into the semifinals of the Belgian Cup as Karelis moved up to 17 goals for the season.
Kostas Mitroglou was the star in Benfica's 0-3 victory over Real SC (third division club) in the Taca de Portugal. The Greek Striker opened the scoring in the 47th minute with a closed ranged header from Zivkovic’s corner. Eight minutes from time, Mitroglou doubled Benfica’s lead after converting from the penalty spot and five minutes later, Gimenez added a third for Benfica.
The win puts Benfica into the quarterfinals of the competition.
