Panathinaikos came away with their fourth straight victory in the Euroleague after a narrow 69-68 win over Baskonia. The win brings Panathinaikos’ record to 9-5 for the season as they currently sit fourth in the standings

In Athens it was a matchup between two inform sides as Panathinaikos hosted Baskonia at the OAKA Nick Galis Stadium. The first quarter was DOMINATED by one player, Chris Singleton. The Panathinaikos player scored 19 points in the first quarter, giving his side an 11-point lead (27-18) after ten minutes of play. An 11-0 Baskonia run to start the quarter gave them the momentum to regain the lead taking a four-point advantage into halftime (37-41).

Panathinaikos’ troubling night on the offensive end continued in the third quarter as the visitors maintained their four-point lead going into the final 10 minutes. The fourth quarter was an even battle between the two teams, but James took over for Panathinaikos scoring 9 of his teams last 11 points. The American guard re-gave the Trifylli a 67-63 lead before Beaubois brought the game within a point (67-66) with a three pointer. James once again came through for the hosts to put them up 69-66 and Baskonia once again cut the lead to one point 69-68 with over a minute remaining.

The game came down to the final play as Baskonia had possession of the ball while looking for the winning shot. However, Calathes’ tremendous defense prevented Beaubois from releasing a shot as Panathinaikos celebrated a 69-68 victory.

Singleton put on a great performance for the hosts, finishing the game with 23-points (19 of them in the first quarter) while Calathes did everything on both ends of the court scoring 14-points, 6-rebounds, 6-assists, and 4-steals. James continued his good form after a great game against Armani Milano, by adding 16-points with many of them coming late in the match.

Next week, Panathinaikos will travel to Kazan to face UNICS knowing that a win will keep them well in the hunt to finish fourth in the Regular season standings. The Trifylli currently sit in fourth place with a 9-5 record.
