Olympiacos ended 2016 in fashion as they put on a great performance to defeat Fenerbahce 71-62 for the 15th round of the Euroleague. The Erythrolefki were in control for three quarters and were able to hold on for the win in the end, despite a late push from Fenerbahce in the fourth quarter. The win moves Olympiacos up to 10-5 for the season while Fenerbahce drop to 9-6

Olympiacos and Fenerbahce faced off at the Stadio Eirinis kai Filias with both teams holding a 9-5 record while Pero Antic and Kostas Sloukas returned to Greece to face their old club. Olympiacos dominated the first half and took a commanding 19-point lead (40-21) into halftime.

The hosts did not let up in the third quarter as the margin grew to as many as 23-points (54-31) with the game heading for a blowout finish. However, in the fourth quarter the Olympiacos players showed signs of fatigue with Fenerbahce making a comeback into the game by cutting the deficit to only 4-points (65-61) late in the quarter. That is when the Olympiacos captain, Vassilis Spanoulis, stepped up to lead his team to a 71-62 victory over the Turkish club.

Mat Lojeski led Olympiacos with 14-points while Birch finished the game with a double-double, scoring 10-points and grabbing 13-rebounds. Spanoulis, who had a small injury problem, finished the game with 7 important points as Papapetrou came through on the defensive end while adding 12-points on offense. Former Olympiacos players, Kostas Sloukas and Pero Antic finished the game with 10 and 5 points, respectively.

The win moves Olympiacos’ record to 10-5 midway through the Euroleague regular season while last year’s finalists, Fenerbahce, move down to 9-6. Olympiacos are currently tied for second in the standings, along with Real Madrid (defeated Efes) and Baskonia (defeated Maccabi Tel-Aviv), heading into 2017.
