- Dominant Germany Too Much for Slovakia -
uefa euro 2016 - round of 16
|Germany||3 - 0||Slovakia|
Germany showed their dominance against Slovakia, playing fantastic football, and easily advanced to the quarter-finals with a 3-0 victory. Drexler had one goal and one assist while Boateng and Gomez each scored for Germany. The Germans now await the winner of Italy/Spain in the quarter-finals.
Germany got off to the start they were looking for with Boateng’s volley-goal giving them the 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. The goal gave Germany the confidence to take control of the game as they dominated possession. After Slovakia was denied by Neuer on a great opportunity to pull level, Gomez tapped in a great individual effort and cross from Drexler to double Germany’s lead. With Germany having a comfortable advantage, the pace of the game fell in the second half. Slovakia looked for a goal from set-plays, but it was Germany who scored their third, through Drexler, and ultimately securing the World Champions’ victory.
Germany will now face Italy or Spain in a very anticipated game in the quarterfinals. Slovakia, who finished 3rd in Group B, will see their Euro 2016 campaign as a success for getting out of the Group Stage.
