uefa euro 2016 - round of 16

Italy 2 - 0 Spain
Chiellini 33'
Pelle 90'+1'

The Italians aren't going anywhere...Conte's men came away with another impressive victory, this time over Spain 2-0 in the Round of 16. Chiellini gave Italy the lead before Pelle's late goal secured their victory. The two time defending champions are eliminated and Italy will play on against Germany in the quarter-finals.

The Italians were clearly the better side in the first half and forced De Gea to keep the scores level early in the game. In the 33rd minute, Eder’s powerful free-kick was well-saved by De Gea, but the ball fell in the path of Chiellini who tapped it in to give Italy the 1-0 lead. It was Chiellini’s 7th goal with Italy over the last 12 years. Italy did not let up in the second half and continued to control the game. Spain failed to threaten the powerful Italian defense and the score remained 1-0. The two time defending champions pressed on in the final 15 minute, but the Italian captain, Buffon, denied the Spaniards on multiple occasions. With time running out, Italy broke away on the counter-attack and found an open Spanish defense. Darmian’s cross was deflected into the path of Pelle who made no mistake, securing Italy’s victory in stoppage time.

The Italians look tactically superb under Conte and will now face a tough German side in the quarter-finals. As for Spain, the magical run of their golden generation (2 Euros, 1 World Cup) comes to an end after another disappointing major tournament (eliminated in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup).
