The Greek National Basketball Team fell 91-76 against Serbia in their final friendly game before the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments tips off on Monday. Katsikaris has a lot to work on in regards to the defensive end, as it seemed to be Greece’s weakness in today’s game. Greece’s next game is on Monday against Iran.
After two wins against Turkey in their first two friendlies (78-52, 75-70), Greece was defeated in their final test in Serbia. Greece was ahead at the end of the first quarter, but Serbia took control from the second quarter on. Greece’s turnovers late in the second quarter allowed Serbia to take a 7 point lead into halftime. With a lackluster defense in the second half, Serbia continued to increase their lead and eventually defeated Greece 91-76. Greece, who gave up 91 points (53 in the first half), was problematic on the defensive end. The absence of Koufos (gastroenteritis) and Sloukas (injured) showed on the court, impacting the Greek defense. Antetokounmpo led Greece once again in scoring, with 14 points, and Stratos Perperoglou followed with 12 points. This was Perperoglou’s first appearance with Greece during the three friendly games, due to his responsibilities with Barcelona in the Spanish ACB Playoffs.
In the coming days, Katsikaris will announce the 12-man roster that will represent Greece in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Greece tips off on Monday, in Turin, against Iran for the Group Stages of the competition.
