- de la Bella & Laifis Sign with Olympiacos, Sanchez Cuts 4 Players -
Olympiacos has announced the signings of Alberto de la Bella and Constantinos Laifis. Victor Sanchez cut Gianniotas, Bertos, Olaitan, and Goutas from the second phase of pre-season training that will take place in Belgium. Finally, Leandro Salino’s contract will not be renewed with the club.
Alberto de la Bella is a 30-year left back that signed a 2-year contract as a “free-agent” with Olympiacos. The Spanish defender has been playing in the Primera Division with Real Sociedad since 2009. With Sociedad, he had 172 appearances and 6 goals. He can cover the whole left side of the field and has inviting attacking characteristics. The player stated that Olympiacos will give him the opportunity to once again play in the Champions League.
Constantinos Laifis signed a 4-year deal with Olympiacos after completing a transfer deal from Anorthosis. The move cost Olympiacos €500,000. However, Laifis will not play with Erythrolefki next season, as he will be loaned out to Standard Liege for one year. Standard Liege will have a €2 million buy-out clause at the end of the season if they decided to sign the player. The Cypriot defensive midfielder has been with Anorthosis since 2012 and had 63 appearances with 8 goals. He also plays with the Cypriot National Team who will play Greece in World Cup Qualifying this fall. After the signing he stated “You don’t have to think twice when a club like Olympiacos approaches you. It is the biggest step in my career. I came to the best team in Greece.” Last year, he was named to the Cypriot First Division’s best Starting XI.
Olympiacos finished the first phase of pre-season training in Austria. Today the team begins the second phase of training in Belgium. Before taking off for Belgium, coach Victor Sanchez announced 4 players that will be cut from the roster and will not fly to Belgium with the rest of the team. The players include: Bertos, Gianniotas, Olaitan, and Goutas. The 4 players will need to look for a new club to play with next season, either through a transfer or a loan deal.
Finally, Leandro Salino’s contract will not be renewed for another season. The Brazilian right back will look for the next stop in his career after a 3-year stay at Olympiacos comes to an end. He signed with Olympiacos in 2013 and had 43 appearances and no goals for the club. The past couple of seasons, he lost his place in the starting lineup after Omar was signed in 2014. Despite this, he was loved by the Olympiacos fans for his passion on the pitch. Via Facebook, he thanked the fans and the club for the opportunity to play at Olympiacos and said he will never forget his stay in Piraeus.
