Daily Recap: Greece Rio 2016 Olympics (Day 9, Sunday, Aug 14)



AGONAsport.com brings you a recap of all of Greece’s Athletes that competed in Day 9 (Sunday, August 14) of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.



TRACK & FIELD – Women's Marathon, FINAL: Ourania Rebouli, Sofia Riga, Panagiota Vlachaki
***Three Greek athletes competed in the Women's Marathon. Ourania Rebouli finished in 88th, Sofia Riga finished in 102nd, and Panagiota Vlachaki finished in 118th.

Synchronized Swimming – Women’s Duet, Preliminary: Papazoglou & Platanioti
***The Greek duo finished in 10th place in the Free Routine for the Women's Synchronized Duet preliminary round. They will perform their technical routine tomorrow with hopes of a top 8 overall finish, leading to a place in Tuesday's final. 

SAILING – Men’s RSX, MEDAL Race: Byron Kokkalanis
***Byron Kokkalanis started the day in 5th place and failed to jump into the top 3 for a medal in Rio. Full story here...

Sailing – Mixed-Narca 17, Preliminary Races 10-12: Bekatorou & Petaniotis
***Bekatorou and Petaniotis finished the preliminary round in 18th place and did not progress to the medal race of the event. In the final three races they finished in 18th, 19th, and did not finish the 11th race. 

Sailing – Men’s Finn, Preliminary Races 9-10: Ioannis Mitakis
***Mitakis put on a great performance in the final preliminary race of the Men's Finn Event to clinch a spot in Tuesday's medal race. He finished the 9th race in 13th place while claiming 3rd place in the final race. He will be the 10th ranked player in the medal round and will hope for a higher overall placement (a medal will be an extremely difficult task). 

Sailing – Men’s 470, Preliminary Races 5-7: Kagialis & Maniatis
***It was another good day for Kagialias & Maniatis! The Greek athletes are in 3rd place after 7 preliminary races and have their eyes on a medal. They finished today's 3 races in 13th, 9th, and 5th and will compete in the final three preliminary races tommorrw. 

Water Polo - Men's Tournament, Group Stage: Greece - Australia (7-12)
***Greece put on their worst showing at the Rio 2016 games, falling to Australia 7-12 in the final group match. The national team will play Italy in the quarter-finals as the 2nd placed team from Group A. Full story here...

Track & Field – Men's High Jump, Qualifying Group A: Konstantinos Baniotis
***Baniotis was far from his best (2.33 meters) in the Men's High Jump Qualifying Round. He cleared 2.17 meters and 2.22 meters but could not surpass 2.26 meters and did not progress to the final. He finished in 34th. 

TRACK & FIELD – Women's Triple Jump, FINAL: Paraskevi Papachristou
***High hopes for a Greek medal in the Women's Triple Jump were laid to rest after Paraskevi Papachristou failed to record a "big" jump in the event's Medal Round. Full story here...
