AEK Larnaca was defeated 3-0 in the Czech Republic by Slovan Liberec and was eliminated from the Europa League. The Cypriots gave up all three goals in the first half with Sykora scoring a hat-trick.

After surprisingly knocking out Russian giants Spartak Moscow in the 3rd Qualifying Round, AEK Larnaca was hoping for a similar performance today in the Czech Republic against Slovan Liberec. The Cypriots lost the first leg at home 0-1 and had a difficult task ahead of them in today’s second leg. Unfortunately, the hosts scored two early goals in the opening 15 minutes (both from Sykora), shutting down AEK’s hopes of another comeback. The Liberec player completed a first half hat-trick right before the halftime whistle with his third goal of the game. AEK had the opportunity to find a consolation goal but Tomas could not convert from the penalty spot in the 89th minute. One minute later, AEK Larnaca was left with 10-men when Murillo was sent off by the referee.

AEK Larnaca came close to the Group Stages of this year’s competition progressing through 3 qualifying rounds before today’s elimination. On their route to the Playoff Round they defeated Folgore, Cliftonville, and Spartak Moskva. They will now turn their attention to the Cypriot First Division.
