- Girtzikis Fighting in his FINAL Days -
Giorgos Girtzikis’s Presidency of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) is slowly coming to an end. Girtzikis and his associates will face felony charges on the “Health Card” Case and will be forced to resign from their positions. However, the current administration is not going down without a fight.
Earlier this week, the Appeals Council announced that the defendants of the “Health Card” Case, involving high ranking officials of EPO, will face trial on felony charges. The Appeals Council decision is final and the defendants will have no right to appeal to the Supreme Court. The “Health Card” Case involves a scandal where EPO lost over €29 Million, causing major financial problems to the Federation.
After the Appeals Council's decision, the Deputy Minister of Athletics, Stavros Kontonis, stated that the current members of EPO facing felony charges must step down within 15 days. He went on to say that if the EPO’s Board of Directors does not replace the current members facing charges, he has the right to replace everyone in the current EPO administration. The high ranking officials facing charges include the President (Giorgos Girtzikis), the substitute president (Vaggelis Topoliatis), 2nd Vice president (Vaggelis Mazarakis), President of KED (Giorgos Karamelidis), Giannis Oikonomidis (member), Nikos Prountzos (member), and Spyros Kalogiannis (member and recent President of the Football League), among others.
The Courts and Kontonis’ decisions mean that the current members facing felony charges will serve a lifetime ban from the sport. Additionally, Girtzikis will not be allowed to partake in the upcoming Presidential elections on October 1st in Chania.
Despite the decision of the Greek Justice System, Girtzikis and his associates announced that they will not abide by the Court's’ law and will act according to their own book of regulations! They scheduled an emergency meeting with the EPO’s Board of Directors (Tuesday) to “replace the current presidential positions” on the Executive Committee with members from their “party,” who are not accused of criminal activity. With this move, Giorgos Girtzikis and the others are still expected to continue controlling EPO, but now in an unofficial manner. Additionally, Girtzikis has another plan to “save” his current position. In Monday’s meeting with FIFA’s representatives, Girtzikis will ask to remain in their (and his associates) positions until EPO’s elections on October 1 and even be candidates at them, under the supervision of the International Association! Unbelievable…
In the end, the many members of the current EPO, including Girtzikis, will soon be removed from their positions in the Federation. The poison that caused so many problems in Greek soccer over the years, on all levels (National Team, Domestic, etc), will soon be BANNED FOR LIFE from the sport.
