A 4th quarter comeback was enough to see Greece past Japan in the opening game of the Group Stages in the Men’s Water Polo Tournament at Rio 2016. Four goals in the 4th quarter (trailed 7-4) gave Greece the 8-7 victory and all 3 points form the match. Greece will face the World Champions Serbia on Monday in Matchday 2 of group play.
Vlachopoulos and Afroudakis put Greece ahead 2-0 in the first period and Japan cut the lead to one goal (4-3) by halftime. Failing to score accompanied by weaknesses on the defensive end led to a tragic third quarter for Greece. Japan scored 4 goals in the 3rd 8-minute period to take a 4-7 lead. Fortunately, the Greek team came out on a mission in the final quarter to complete a great comeback, netting 4 goals in the final 8 minutes. Greece was exceptional in the 4th period and took advantage of their extra-man opportunities, including Milonakis’ winner with 36 seconds to play. Vlachopoulos was the leading scorer for the Galanolefki with Afroudakis, Fountoulis, Pontikeas, Kolomvos, and Milonakis each scoring one goal.
Greece will face the World Champions Serbia in the second match of Group A on Monday. Serbia drew with Hungary 13-13 earlier today as Greece leads the group.
