Anna Korakaki has won GOLD in the Women’s 25m pistol Shooting event! The young Greek athlete won her second medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and gave Greece their first gold since 2004! She defeated Monika Karsch from Germany 8-6 in the gold medal match.
Earlier in the day in qualifying, Korakaki finished second overall (amongst 40 athletes) to qualify for the semi finals of the event. In the semi-finals she claimed first place with 19 points and assured herself at minimum the silver medal.
In the gold medal match, she faced Monika Karsch from Germany, who finished 2nd in the semi-final phase. Korakaki won the first 3 shooting sets to go ahead 6-0 and was only one point away from the gold medal. However, Karsch went on to win the next three sets to level the scores 6-6. In the 7th set “sudden death” Korakaki took an early lead and with one shot remaining was ahead by 1 point. The 20-year Greek athlete kept her composure and hit her target on the final shot to win the set 4-2 and the match 8-6. With the win, Korakaki claimed her 2nd medal at these Olympic Games!
This is Greece’s first gold medal since the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In Beijing 2008, Greece earned 2 silver and 2 bronze medals while only bringing home 2 bronze medals in London 2012. Koraki is the first Greek female athlete to win TWO medals at a single Olympic games after winning the bronze in the Women's 10m Pistol event on Saturday. The last time a Greek athlete won two medals in the same Olympics was in 1912 by Kostas Tsiklitiras.
