- Revenge for APOEL -
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - GROUP STAGE (GROUP B)
|APOEL||2 - 1||Astana|
de Camargo 87'
APOEL came away with a dramatic comeback victory to defeat Astana in their opening match of the Europa League Group Stage. Astana, who knocked out APOEL in last year’s Champions League qualifying, went ahead late in the first half before two goals in the final 15 minutes gave APOEL all 3 points in Nicosia.
Astana shocked the home supporters when they took the 0-1 lead right before the halftime whistle through Maksimovic. In the second half, APOEL pressed Astana in their final third looking for the equalizer which came in the 74th minute with Vinicius. With only 3 minutes remaining, APOEL completed the comeback when Lago’s cross was met by de Camargo’s header, which squeezed by the opposing keeper to give APOEL the 2-1 victory and all 3 points.
Today’s result is sweet revenge against Astana, who knocked out the Cypriot club in last year’s Champions League qualifying. This is not the first time in this season’s European play that APOEL has completed a dramatic late comeback. In Champions League qualifying, the Cypriots scored 3 goals in stoppage time to progress to the Playoff Qualifying round at the expense of Norwegian side, Rosenborg.
APOEL will meet the Greek Champions, Olympiacos, in the 2nd matchday of Group B (defeated Young Boys 0-1) while Astana hosts Young Boys.
