- Easy Win for AEK -
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 4
|Veria||0 - 2||AEK|
AEK came away with a rather easy 0-2 victory in Veria for the 4th Matchday in the Greek SuperLeague. Bakasetas opened the score with a free-kick and Vargas secured the victory in the final minutes for AEK. The Enosi had numerous opportunities to increase their lead (2 crossbars) but will be happy with their second win of the season.
AEK sent their first warning in the 13th minute when Mantalos missed a great opportunity to open the score with his close-range shot finding the crossbar. Five minutes later, Bakasetas found the opener with a powerful left-footed free-kick, which was misread by Lopez, giving AEK the 0-1 lead. Veria came close to an equalizer but Simoes cleared the ball off the line from Kapetanos’ effort. From that point on, AEK controlled the match without being threatened by the hosts. In the 41st minute, Bakasetas’ thunderous strike was tipped onto the crossbar by Lopez, denying the Greek International his second goal of the game. Hugo Almeida fell unlucky at the end of the first half as he was subbed off due to injury.
Veria came out the stronger side in the second half needing a goal to pull level. AEK could not keep up their pressure from the first 45 minutes and failed to increase their lead early in the second half. The visitors had numerous chances to secure their victory with Bakasetas and Platellas failing to find the back of the net before Vargas secured AEK’s victory in the 87th minute. A clever back-heel from Bakasetas set up Vargas inside the penalty area, whose shot was well saved by Lopez, and Vargas’ follow-up effort was turned in for AEK’s second goal of the night. The final whistle came shortly after with AEK earning their second victory of the season.
Today's victory is AEK's first win away from home in over 8 months! Their last away win came on January 17th in Giannina against PAS where once again Vargas found the back of the net. Since that victory in Giannina, AEK has recorded 6 draws and 3 losses in their last 9 away matches.
With today’s result, AEK sits atop the Greek SuperLeague standings with 6 points. In Matchday 5, they will host Iraklis while Veria will look for their first points away to Panionios.
