Greece defeated Belgium 3-0 set in the second to final match of EuroVolley 2017 Qualifying and secured, at minimum, second place in the group. With today's results, Greece and Belgium will fight for first place in their final group matches against Ukraine and Moldova, respectively. Αll the scenarios for the final day of qualification are below…
Belgium, who had defeated Greece 3-0 set in the first qualifying tournament, were the heavy favorites in today's match to celebrate their spot in the Eurovolley finals with a win against Greece. However, with Greece in good form since their opening loss to Belgium, the Galanolefki had confidence for a good result in today's encounter.
The Greeks got off to a great start winning the first set comfortably 25-19 and took a commanding 2-0 lead after winning the second set 25-22. In the third set, Greece took an early two point advantage and maintained their 2-3 point lead throughout the set. With Belgium unable to string together a run of consecutive points, Greece’s lead proved decisive as they went on to win the third set 25-21 and the match 3-0, handing Belgium their first defeat of qualifying.
Today's impressive result gives Greece at minimum second place in the Pool C (leads to a playoff) while keeping their hopes alive for first place in the group, which leads to an automatic place in the EuroVolley Championships. Currently, Belgium and Greece are tied atop of Pool C with four wins from five matches as both have eleven points (the second tie breaker). Belgium holds the advantage in the third tiebreaker, set wins:loss ratio, with Belgium ahead 12:5 compared to Greece’s 12:7.
Scenarios: With the current standings, Greece will need help from Moldova (play Belgium) in tomorrow's match for hopes of first place in the group. For this to happen, Greece must beat the Ukraine with a clean score, 3-0 or 3-1 set, and Belgium must lose to Moldova or win in the tiebreaker set, 3-2. If Belgium defeats Moldova with a clean score, 3-0 or 3-1, they will clinch top spot and earn an automatic place in the European Championships. As the second placed team, Greece will compete in a two-legged (home and away) playoff qualifier for a place in the European championships.
Tomorrow, Moldova and Belgium play at 9:00 AM while Greece will face-off against the Ukraine at 2:00 PM (EST) in the final qualifiers in Group C.
