Despite the absence of their captain, Vassilis Spanoulis, Olympiacos was able to walk away with a big win on the road, defeating Barcelona 67-69. Olympiacos’ defense was too strong for Giorgos Barztokas’ side as Olympiacos increased their record to 12-5 in the Euroleague.
Olympiacos traveled to Barcelona without their captain in a difficult away fixture for the 17th round of the Euroleague. Throughout the game, the two teams were neck and neck as neither side was able to pull away in the score. Although the Erythrolefki were without their main scorer, their defense kept them well in the game.
Barcelona’s strong start to the fourth quarter gave them a slight six point lead (64-58) with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game. However, Olympiacos’ solid defense and big buckets from Mantzaris and Printezis, found the visitors ahead by three points (64-67) with a minute to play.
With 26 seconds remaining, Barcelona responded with a three pointer to bring the game level, but Vaggelis Mantzaris kept his composure at the free-throw line, re-giving Olympiacos a two-point advantage (67-69) with just over 7-seconds left to play. The Olympiacos defense made a statement once again and shutdown Barcelona on the final play of the game to celebrate a big victory on the road, 67-69.
Printezis led Olympiacos with 16-points and 9-rebounds while Lojeski added 11-points. Milutinov played a vital role in defense for the visitors while scoring 6 points and grabbing 4 rebounds.
The win brings Olympiacos’ record in the Euroleague to 12-5, keeping them in control for 4th place, which leads to homecourt advantage in the playoffs. Giorgos Bartzokas’ Barcelona move down to 7-10 as they continue their disappointing season in Europe.
