-- NO WINNER IN ATHENIAN DERBY --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 11
|Panathinaikos||0 - 0||AEK|
It was a night when goalkeepers took center stage as Panathinaikos and AEK Athens played out a goalless draw in a tightly contested SuperLeague Athens derby clash at ‘Leoforos’ on Sunday. The result keeps both teams well behind league leaders, Olympiacos.
Chances were at a premium in a tense affair between two clubs who have hardly covered themselves in glory so far this season, with Panathinaikos’ young custodian Odisseas Vlachodimos and AEK’s Vasilios Barkas blocking any efforts to breach their goals.
Despite the Greens having the home advantage of a noisy following led by the Gate 13 Ultras, it was Vlachodimos who was the busiest of the two keepers in the first half with AEK on top for long spells. Lucas Villafáñez had the best chance of the night for the hosts midway through the second half, but the Argentine’s fierce shot was brilliantly saved by AEK’s young Greek keeper Barkas, as both teams lost ground on runaway leaders Olympiakos.
The result leaves Panathinaikos and AEK languishing in fourth and fifth spots respectively. The Greens are just two points adrift of second placed Panionios/Xanthi (28 points) with AEK a further four points behind.
