Olympiacos Pull Further Ahead in Title Race...

Olympiacos 2 - 0 Xanthi

Manthatis 90'+2'

SuperLeague leaders Olympiacos returned to winning ways with a 2-0 home win over in Matchday 17’s top of the table clash against Xanthi at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.

While it was far from convincing stuff from a workmanlike Erythrolefki side, Paulo Bento’s men showed once again that they know how to pick up points when they are lacking in form – a skill which saw them pick up their first win in three games after two successive draws.

Xanthi, who went into the match looking to close the gap on their rivals, found themselves behind in unfortunate circumstances when defender Stratos Svarnas accidentally put the ball into his own net in the 48th minute after good play from Seba.

Razvan Lucescu’s team had acquitted themselves admirably up until that point, with the home side looking frustrated after a poor opening 45 minutes in which they failed to create a clear opening.

Conversely, Xanthi threatened to score twice in the opening half, with Theodoros Vasilakakis and Adrian Lucero both missed gilt-edged chances. The goal, however, seemed to take the wind out of Xanthi’s sails, who had also been on the receiving end of some poor officiating from the assistant referees for two questionable offside calls on promising counter-attacks.

Xanthi failed to trouble Olympiacos custodian Stefano Kapino in the second half, and as the match petered out the home side sealed the points and put a gloss on the scoreline courtesy of Greece Under-19 forward Giorgos Manthatis’s injury time strike.

The win moved Olympiacos on to 42 points, extending their lead at the SuperLeague summit to 11 points, with Panionios and Xanthi level on 31 points in second and third place respectively.
