-- PANATHINAIKOS MISS OUT ON SECOND --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 17
|Kerkyra||1 - 1||Panathinaikos|
|Epstein 29'||Berg 21'|
Panathinaikos wasted a golden opportunity to move into second spot behind eternal rivals Olympiakos after they threw away more points in a 1-1 draw with Kerkyra in Sunday’s late kick-off on the island of Kerkyra.
The Greens went into their SuperLeague Matchday 17 clash match knowing that they could move above both Xanthi and Panionios, and it seemed three points could well be on the cards when their talismanic Sweden striker Marcus Berg opened the scoring in style the 22nd minute.
After springing the hosts’ offside trap to latch onto a superb pass from Argentine midfielder Lucas Villafáñez, Berg then beat goalkeeper Fotis Koutzavasilis with a cool lob.
Unfortunately for Marinos Ouzounidis’ team, the lead lasted just seven minutes as Kerkyra’s German midfielder Denis Epstein outsmarted both Nikos Marinakis and Stefanos Evangelou to slot home and spark jubilant celebrations among the home fans.
Berg wasted a gilt-edged chance to make it 1-2 with another lob in the 69th minute, with his tame effort cleared off the line just in time by home defender Anastasios Venetis. The Greens then found themselves devoid of ideas thereafter as the hosts held firm for a well-deserved draw.
The result leaves Ouzounidis’ men 12 points behind leaders Olympiacos, and a point adrift of Panionios and Xanthi, who lie second and third respectively in the table.
