Panathinaikos Legend Vaggelis Panakis Dies at Age 84

The Panathinaikos and Greek football family mourn today as Vaggelis Panakis passed away at the of 84. Panakis was one of the best strikers to ever play for Panathinaikos.

Vaggelis Panakis was born on June 8, 1933 and wrote his name in Panathinaikos history during his career. He was a member of the “golden” Panathinaikos team of 1963-1964 that went undefeated and won the Greek Title which to this day, remains the only Greek team to go undefeated for a whole season and win the league title. That season, Panakis was the Trifylli’s leading scorer with 16 goals in 24 games.

He played at Panathinaikos his whole career (1951-1965) making 91 appearances for the club while scoring 57 goals. With the Prasini, Panakis won 6 Greek League Titles (1953, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965) and one Greek Cup in 1955.

Panakis also registered 14 caps for his country and scored 5 times with the Ethnosimo.

Panakis had many health issues and as of late he was bedridden. He passed away today at the age of 84.
