Olympiacos struck down Bamberg’s three game winning streak against the Greek Champions after their 83-77 victory at the Stadio Eirinis kai Filias. Birch came through late in the fourth quarter for the hosts as he finished the game with a double-double.
Olympiacos hosted an old foe, Brose Bamberg, at the Stadio Eirinis kai Filias for the 20th Round in the Euroleague. Coming into today’s match, the German side had a three game winning streak after defeating the Erythrolefki twice in last year’s competition and once during the first half of this season.
Despite losing Giorgos Printezis before the match, the hosts took control early on and accumulated a comfortable double digit lead for most of the game. However, in the fourth quarter the visitors staged a comeback to pull within two points (71-69) with just over four minutes to play.
That is when Olympiacos’ best player on the night, Khem Birch, stepped up and re-gave Olympiacos a decisive lead. The Canadian converted his offensive rebounds (3) into points (77-69) before Spanoulis increased the advantage back to double digits (81-71) with just over a minute to play. In the end, Olympiacos celebrated their first win over Bamberg in three games with a final score of 83-77.
Khem Birch finished the game with a double-double, 15-points and 14-rebounds, and scored eight points while grabbing three offensive rebounds in the final four minutes to lead Olympiacos to victory. Vassilis Spanoulis added 15-points (6-assists) as both Lojeski and Papanikolaou had a good game with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Melli led Bamberg with 14 points while Nikos Zisis finished the game with 13 points.
The win brings Olympiacos’ record to 14-6 as they trail both Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow by one win atop the Euroleague Standings. Bamberg are 12th with a 7-13 record.
