-- Platanias Comeback to Defeat Kerkyra --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 18
|Platanias||2 - 1||Kerkyra|
Platanias fought back from a goal down to see off Kerkyra in Chania courtesy of a late controversial penalty which had the visitors players and officials livid.
The Cretan hosts found themselves a goal down in this entertaining Matchday 18 encounter after 39 minutes when Brazilian forward Thuram opened the scoring for the Faiakes.
It was a cruel blow for the home side, who had looked on top on the balance of play in the opening half. Platanias needed a quick goal after the half-time break, and they got it thanks to Brazilian defender Vanderson.
Platanias’ captain lashed the ball home from close range to score his first SuperLeague goal in 91 matches for the Cretan side.
The goal sparked the visitors into life, however, and German midfielder Denis Epstein broke clear in the 80th minute and was denied only by the woodwork as his shot cannoned off the post and trickled to safety.
The frustration from that miss then quickly accelerated to anger just four minutes later when Kerkyra defender Vladimir Dimitrovski was harshly judged to have fouled Platanias striker Giorgos Manoussos in the penalty area, the latter seeming to go down too easily.
A penalty was awarded though, and Manoussos dusted himself down to slot the ball home and clinch three vital points for the hosts.
Platanias sit in 8th place only one point behind AEK (6th) while Kerkyra are 12th with 17 points, four points clear of the drop zone.
