-- Berg Bags Second Half Hat-trick as Greens Rout Panaitolikos --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 20
|Panathinaikos||4 - 0||Panetolikos|
|Berg 67', 80', 90'+2'
Sweden striker Marcus Berg scored a second-half treble to lead Panathinaikos to a comfortable home victory over Panaitolikos at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium on Sunday.
The win helped Marinos Ouzounidis’ team move up to fourth in the SuperLeague standings on 35 points, but the Trifylli remain 16 points adrift of eternal rivals and runaway league leaders Olympiacos. Panathinaikos sit 3 points behind second placed Panionios and 1 point behind third placed PAOK.
The Greens had struggled to break their opponents from Agrino down in a tightly-contested first half of this Matchday 20 clash, but once Berg opened the scoring in the 67th minute, the home side cut loose as Panaitolikos faded.
Berg fired in from close range after Argentine midfielder Lucas Villafanez was denied to get the scoring started, and the Swede scored a fortuitous second in the 80th minute when his long-range shot deflected wickedly off visiting defender Georgios Kousas and left goalkeeper Dimitris Kyriakidis stranded.
Finnish midfielder Robin Lod made it 3-0 with a side-footed finish from Villafanez’s assist a minute from full-time, and Berg rounded off a jubilant night for the Gate 13 Ultras when he headed home captain Zeca’s cross in the second minute of added time.
While the Greens celebrated Berg moving on to 12 goals - just one behind SuperLeage top scorer Brown Ideye - the Kanarinia were left to ponder what might have been had they taken more risks after a solid first half display.
The Agrinio club may consider themselves safe with a nine-point cushion above the relegation zone, but if they could be dragged into the dogfight at the bottom if their results don't improve.
