Atromitos recorded a second successive SuperLeague win in as many weeks under new boss Ricardo Sa Pinto on Saturday after defeating Xanthi 2-1 at the Peristeri Municipal Stadium.
A goal in each half from Greek midfielder Vangelis Platellas and Argentine forward Martin Tonso proved enough to seal all three points for Sa Pinto’s team, who had not won a match for over two months before last week’s 1-0 success at Asteras Tripolis.
Tunisian forward Hamza Younes had scored from the penalty spot in the the 57th minute in between the two home goals, but the visitors could not find the equaliser despite applying late pressure.
A miserable night for Xanthi was compounded in added time when they had defender Aristotelis Karasalidis sent off for picking up a second booking.
The win saw ninth-placed Atromitos move level on 29 points with Platanias who are one place above in eighth spot, while Xanthi remain fifth. However the Northern club, who have not won since Matchday 16, risk slipping out of the playoff places if their form does not improve.
