Panathinaikos were handed their 10th defeated of the Euroleague season, after falling 77-72 away to Darussafaka and essentially lost all hope for home court advantage in the playoffs.
The loss drops Panathinaikos’ record to 14-10 as they sit fifth in the standings three wins behind fourth placed Fenerbahce, who have a 16-8 record (Fenerbahce also have the tiebreaker advantage over Panathinaikos). With only six games remaining in the regular season, finishing in fourth place now seems like an impossible task for the Greek side.
After a fairly even first half in today’s match, Panathinaikos fell behind early in the second half by as many as twelve points (48-36) , but managed to get back into the game and take the lead in the fourth quarter with the scores at 55-61 and 65-69. However, careless mistakes from the visitors on one end and clutch shots for the hosts on the other saw Darussafaka pull ahead late in the game as the Turkish side held on for the 77-72 victory.
Singleton was Panathinaikos’ leading scorer with 23 points (16 in the second half) while Rivers finished the game with 12 points. Bourousis came close to a double-double with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Wanamaker led the hosts with 24 points.
With fourth place looking to be a long shot, Panathinaikos will now hope to hold onto 5th place in the standings which will pair them with the fourth placed side in the playoffs, currently Fenerbahce. The Trifyllis’ next match will be away to Zalgiris.
