APOEL Eliminated With Second Defeat to Anderlecht

Anderlecht 1 - 0 APOEL

APOEL’s Europa League run came to an end as they were defeated 1-0 away to Anderlecht in their second leg encounter.

After a 0-1 defeat at home to Anderlecht in the first leg, APOEL had an extremely tough task at hand as they traveled to Belgium for the second leg. The Cypriot Champions, however, were lucky to not fall behind in the score early on as Anderlecht dominate the run of play and wasted many chances to take the lead.

APOEL were well in the tie after the goalless first half and looked much better in the second 45 minutes, but it was the hosts who found the breakthrough in the 65th minute. APOEL lost the ball in the midfield, sending Anderlecht on the counter attack and after a good save from Waterman, Acheampong put home the rebound to double his side's lead on aggregate.

After the goal, APOEL fought for an equalizer which would spark some hope in the game, however the galazokitrini were unable to find the back of the net, bowing out of the competition with their second defeat to the Belgian giants.

APOEL, who finished first in the group stages ahead of Olympiacos, will see this year’s Europa League run as a success reaching the last 16 of the competition. They will now turn their attention to the Cypriot First Division playoffs where they hold a six point lead atop the standings.
