The Largest Win by a Turkish Club Over a Greek Team
On Thursday, Olympiacos were on the wrong side of history as Besiktas recorded the biggest win for a Turkish club over a Greek club in European play.
Olympiacos fell 4-1 away to Besiktas in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League Round of 16 action and were eliminated from the competition. The result, which seems unjustly based on the course of the game, was the highest win for a Turkish club over a Greek club in European Cup play history.
Before Thursday, no Greek team had lost in Turkey by more than one goal. Olympiacos have lost to Galatasaray 1-0 on two occasions in the past while Panathinaikos have fallen by the same scoreline to the same club.
Before today’s match, Panathinaikos’ 1-3 loss in Athens during the 2009 UEFA Europa League group stages was the heaviest Greek defeat by a Turkish club.
