AEK Soar to Third
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 25
|Atromitos||0 - 1||AEK|
AEK captain Petros Mantalos scored the only goal of the game as the Kitrinomavri celebrated an away win for the first time in five months with a narrow success against Atromitos at the Peristeri Municipal stadium on Saturday.
Mantalos struck in the 57th minute of this SuperLeague Matchday 25 contest to seal the three-point haul for Manolo Jimenez’s side, who just about shaded the match against Ricardo Sa Pinto’s men on the overall balance of play.
The win lifted AEK into third place in the standings above both PAOK and Panathinaikos with 43 points, although they may be knocked down to fourth if the Greens take the honours in Sunday’s big Athens derby match when leaders Olympiacos visit Leoforos.
The match in Peristeri was not without incidents, with both AEK and Atromitos having perfectly valid goals chalked off for wrong offside decisions given by the match officials.
Both sides also hit the woodwork in what was an entertaining 90 minutes in the day’s late kick-off, with AEK’s Sergios Araujo denied a goal in the 10th minute while Atromitos’ Argentine midfielder Martin Tonso hit the post late on.
Atromitos, who have enjoyed something of a revival under their Portuguese coach Sa Pinto, remain in eighth place seven points adrift of the last playoff place currently occupied by Panathinaikos.
